This homemade blue cheese dressing recipe tastes so good, why buy it again? It takes 5 minutes and is perfect for salads and as a dip.
When Alex and I first started cooking together 10 plus years ago, we cleaned out our pantry of store-bought salad dressings and started making homemade salad dressing. Now, we’re not against buying salad dressing. But these days we almost always make time for homemade dressings because they are just that delicious!
Homemade salad dressings are 1. very tasty 2. don’t have preservatives or added ingredients 3. are pretty quick to make! Such is the case with this homemade blue cheese dressing recipe. Neither of us were ever a huge fan of blue cheese dressing: until we created this recipe! Keep reading for our best homemade blue cheese dressing recipe.
Making this blue cheese dressing recipe
If you follow us or have our Pretty Simple Cooking cookbook, you may know that Alex and my forte is creating recipes at the intersection of healthy, pretty simple, and delicious. Our favorite recipes taste amazing, are pretty easy to make, and aren’t too terrible for you. We’ve designed this homemade blue cheese dressing recipe to hit all categories.
Most blue cheese dressings are made with a lot of mayonnaise. We’re not against a high quality mayonnaise since it’s a whole food made up of a short ingredient list. Here’s what we did to add a healthy blue cheese dressing spin:
- Cut the mayo with plain yogurt! This helps it to be a little lighter, and adds a bit of those lovely yogurt probiotics.
- Keep some mayo. This recipe has less than the standard blue cheese dressing recipe. But the mayo is important to add the richness and so that the blue cheese dressing sticks to the lettuce and vegetables (you don’t want a watery dressing!). When making a “healthy spin” dressing, it’s still got to bring big flavor and stick to the salad in the right way.
Mash in the blue cheese for a chunky texture
Add to the mayo and yogurt that delicious blue cheese! We specified ours in crumbles and ounces so you can use either crumbles or a wedge of blue cheese. The key here is to use the back of a spoon to mash together the blue cheese and vinegar before stirring in the remaining ingredients.
This infuses blue cheese into the entire texture of the blue cheese dressing recipe! Then you’ll stir in some remaining crumbles after whisking together the dressing to get those signature lumps.

Description
This homemade blue cheese dressing recipe tastes so good, why buy it again? It takes 5 minutes and is perfect for salads and as a dip.
Ingredients
- 6 tablespoons blue cheese crumbles, divided (1.5 ounces blue cheese)
- 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
- ½ cup plain whole milk yogurt*
- ¼ cup high quality mayonnaise
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon onion powder
- ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
- ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, use the back of a spoon to mash together ¼ cup (1 ounce) of the blue cheese crumbles with the vinegar for about 1 minute until a creamy paste forms.
- Mix in the yogurt, mayonnaise, garlic powder, onion powder, kosher salt, and black pepper until a creamy dressing forms.
- Stir in the remaining 2 tablespoons blue cheese crumbles, using your fingers to break up any very large pieces. Store refrigerated (keeps at least 1 week).
Notes
*Make sure the yogurt has a creamy consistency. Most yogurt brands we’ve used work, but we found one brand that was very runny which didn’t work well for salad dressing.

I know you do not want to mention the “runny” brand of yogurt, but could you tell me a yogurt brand to use that never fails you? :). Thanks! Julie
Haha good question! Yes, we usually get Stonyfield whole milk yogurt!
Amazing! This is so easy and so delicious. Thank you for sharing this.
I had to substitute light sour cream for yogurt and the dressing is very thick. Should I think it out to dress salad or use thick??
Yes, you can stir in a little bit of water to thin it out before serving!
