Here’s how to make a beet smoothie, full of sweet flavor and vivid color! This healthy puree is loaded with nutrients and fruit.
Want to eat more beets? Try a Beet Smoothie: the perfect way to get beets into your diet with delicious fruity flavor. You don’t even need to worry about cooking the beet! Peel it and throw it in raw, and it gives the most vibrant color to this puree. It’s the perfect way to use beets you’re not sure what to do with. Alex and I were a little wary about what the flavor of a beet smoothie would be. (Too beet-y…?) But it came out with the best sweet flavor offset by banana, apple and pineapple! Here’s how to make it.
Ingredients for this beet smoothie
Beets are usually eaten cooked. But in this beet smoothie, you can use a raw beet! Just make sure that when you peel it, you take precautions from the beet juice: it can stain your hands and clothes! Here’s what you need to make a beet smoothie:
- Raw beet: Yep, just peel it, dice it and throw it in the blender!
- Green apple: Beets and apples are a fitting pair. It’s the key many smoothies: it brings in sweetness and texture.
- Banana: Banana adds creamy texture and more sweetness.
- Frozen pineapple: Here’s the kicker: it enhances the sweet tart flavor and adds the right icy texture.
- Water and ice: Ice and water add texture and body.
Do you need to peel beets for smoothies?
Yes! The beet skin is tough and can make a beet smoothie gritty. Take the 1 minute it takes to peel the beet, and you’ll have a smoother puree.
Can I use cooked beets instead of raw?
You can use either cooked or raw beets in a smoothie! If you have cooked beets already on hand, a smoothie is a perfect place to use them. Or, cooked packaged beets are becoming easy to find in grocery stores. A package of these is also great for smoothies.
How to add protein to this beet smoothie
On it own, this beet smoothie is packed with flavor and nutrients. But are you looking for a smoothie with protein to make a filling breakfast or a snack? Here are some ideas to add protein:
- Greek yogurt: Make a creamy beet smoothie! Add ¼ to ½ cup Greek yogurt for a boost of protein and probiotics for a healthy gut. If necessary, add a few splashes of water to get it to blend. This will lighten the color a bit to a lighter pink.
- Nut butter. Add almond butter or cashew butter to the mix! Start with 1 tablespoon, and add more as desired. It will change the color a bit as well.
Flavor variations!
Want to change up this beet smoothie? Here are some ideas for ways to make it even tastier:
- Ginger: Add ½ teaspoon grated ginger to the mix for a spicy brightness.
- Blueberry: Substitute 1 cup frozen blueberries for the frozen pineapple.
- Coconut: Throw in a handful of coconut to the mix.
- Mango: Substitute 1 cup frozen mango for the pineapple.
Smoothie storage
Smoothies are best eaten immediately. But this beet smoothie actually lasts 1 day refrigerated, stored in a sealed container or a mason jar with the lid on. It may separate, which is perfectly natural. Just shake it up and you’re good to go!

We have allergies to Banana and Avocado in my house… what’s a good substitute?
You can substitute 1 cup frozen mango or 1 cup apple for a banana. You can also try about 1/2 cup oats or silken tofu as a banana substitute, but you’ll also need to add sweetener like maple syrup or honey to replace the sugar from the banana.
Great Beet Smoothy, I tried abd love it !
Thank you!!!

Amazing smoothie, tastes delicious and refreshing.

I added 1 cup of frozen strawberries also, and used orange juice instead of water.
Everyone loved it except my 14 year old son, who thought it tasted like dirt.

So glad you enjoyed!
We’re trying veggie smoothies. So far love spinach smoothies and cucumbers so we tried beet smoothies today and i found this recipe.
Sadly it wasn’t pleasant. The beet overpowers it and tastes like it came straight from the ground. Too earthy. Couldn’t taste the apple, pineapple or banana.

I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy it!

I would love to see these recipes without the plastic straws that so endanger marine life. There are alternatives of metal, bamboo, corn starch… or use a spoon!
Thank you ;)
Hi there, these straws are made from paper!
