This strawberry margarita recipe is frosty, fruity and refreshing! A spin on the classic cocktail, it’s easy to make with frozen berries.
Love margaritas but want a fruity spin? Try this tasty and refreshing variation: a Strawberry Margarita! This one is frosty and fruity, full of berry flavor but perfectly complimented with tangy lime and the bite of tequila. The marg pairs perfectly with fruit, and we’ve already got several fruity margarita recipes under our belt: watermelon, blackberry, mango and peach. When we whipped up this latest, we fell in love with its vibrant red color and sweet tart flavor. Here’s how to make it!
What’s in a strawberry margarita?
The margarita is a classic cocktail; it’s actually on the list of International Bartender Association’s IBA official cocktails. This means that there’s an “official” definition of the ingredients in a margarita: lime juice, Cointreau, and tequila. That’s what’s in our Classic Margarita, our very favorite of them all.
This strawberry margarita is less like the classic and more like a frozen margarita! It’s made in a blender, and comes out with more of a frozen texture! Here are the ingredients you’ll need:
- Frozen strawberries
- Tequila (use blanco or reposado)
- Cointreau or Triple Sec
- Fresh lime juice
- Agave syrup or simple syrup
- Ice
How to make a strawberry margarita
The strawberry margarita is made in a blender, so it’s not the standard way to make a margarita like our Classic Margarita. It’s actually even easier than a classic, because you don’t need a cocktail shaker. Plus, this strawberry margarita makes two drinks, so you can make Here’s what to do (or go to the full recipe below):
- Rim the glass with salt. A salted rim is a must here! Why? The salt enhances the sweet and sour flavors in the drink! More on that, below.
- Blend! Throw all the ingredients in a blender and blend until it’s full combined and creamy. There are two options for the texture of this margarita: keep reading…
Want it less icy? Keep blending.
The texture of this strawberry margarita is icy, but you can also make it more of a room temperature fruity margarita. How? Just keep blending it! If you blend for a few minutes, it will become less icy and have more of a blended, juice like texture.
- Icy texture. Keep it frozen for a smoothie-like texture: blend just until it’s fully integrated and icy.
- Juicy texture. If you keep blending for a few minutes, you can get to a texture that’s more like juice. It’s still cold, but you can taste the flavors even more when it’s not as icy.
Which do we prefer? Well, we like it both ways! Personally I like it a little warmer so I can taste the sweet berries and edge of the tequila. But keep it icy and it’s a perfect summer cocktail for a hot afternoon on the patio.
Can I use fresh strawberries instead of frozen?
Yes! Do you have some delicious ripe strawberries on hand? By all means use them in this recipe! The texture will come out more like the juicy texture mentioned above, which is just as tasty (or more so).
The advantage of using frozen berries? They get a more icy texture if that’s what you’re looking for. It’s also nice to have the ability to store the berries for long periods of time and whip up a strawberry margarita on demand, vs having to find great tasting fresh berries that you have to use in a few days.

What tequila for strawberry margaritas?
You can use any type of tequila for this strawberry margarita, but keep the following in mind:
- Buy at least mid-range tequila: none of that cheap stuff! This cocktail tastes only as good as the quality of alcohol. So try to get a mid-price tequila: you can taste the difference.
- Blanco or reposado works: fruity margaritas can get away with blanco. We love the nuance that comes with using tequila reposado (aged) in margaritas. But for this fruity margarita with an icy texture, you can use tequila blanco! Because there’s so much flavor and texture going on with the strawberries, you need less nuance.
When to serve a strawberry margarita
When you need a change-up in your margarita, try this strawberry margarita! Since it has an icy texture, it’s especially suited for summer.
- Summer drink
- Pool party or lake house drink
- Happy hour drink
- Dinner party drink
- Cinco de Mayo drink
- Girls night, bachelorette party or bridal shower drink
- Cocktail hour drink

it would be good if you stopped using cups as measures
We added the ounces for frozen strawberries to the recipe. All our cocktail recipes have both ounces and cup/tablespoon measurements. Thanks!!
100% agreed. Metric would be great.
