Every margarita lover’s got to have a Patron margarita recipe! This one blends the perfect proportions to make an astoundingly smooth drink.

Patron margarita

Here’s a drink that every margarita lover’s got to try at least once…the Patron Margarita! While tequila aficionados might turn their nose at this brand, it really does make a stellar marg. Patrón is a brand of high-end tequila that makes for an astoundingly smooth drink. We’ve tried at least 30 variations on margarita recipes, and this one ranks towards the top. Here’s how to make it!

Ingredients in this Patron margarita recipe

The margarita is one of the more popular classic cocktails in history. Invented in Mexico in the 1930’s, it was a variation on the Daisy, a popular brandy cocktail (“margarita” is daisy in Spanish). The classic way to make it is with 3 classic ingredients, per the International Bartender Association’s IBA official cocktails. For a Patron margarita, just make it using Patrón tequila. Here are the ingredients you’ll need:

  • Patrón Silver tequila
  • Cointreau (or Triple Sec)
  • Lime juice

What is Patrón tequila? Is it considered a “good” tequila?

What is Patron tequila, and why buy it? Here’s a quick look at this special brand:

  • Patrón tequila is tequila made by the Patrón Spirits Company (as of 2018 by Bacardi). Tequila is a distilled spirit made from the blue agave plant. The Patrón brand is manufactured in Jalisco, Mexico and was introduced in 1989.
  • What does Patron tequila taste like? Patron is spicy and sweet at the same time, agave forward with hints of caramel, honey, vanilla, and white pepper on the finish. The flavor is smoother than other types of tequila, and makes a uniquely balanced margarita.
  • Is Patron tequila top shelf? Yes, Patrón is considered a top-shelf tequila. Many tequila connoisseurs prefer craft tequilas that are small batch and have a more interesting flavor. Patron is a good starter tequila and is great in mixed drinks like the margarita, Paloma and Tequila Sunrise.
  • There are several types of Patron: Patron Silver is the most popular. There’s also many more types like Patrón Añejo (aged 1 to 4 years), Patrón Reposado (aged 2 to 12 months), the “Gran Patrón” family of luxury tequilas, and more.

How to make a Patron margarita: single drink

Got your Patrón? Grab a bottle of Cointreau or Triple Sec and a few limes, and let’s get mixing! You can make a single Patron margarita, or a pitcher. Scroll down for the pitcher instructions! Here’s what to do:

  • Make the salt rim. The best salt to use is kosher salt or flaky sea salt (not table salt!). Place it in a single layer on a plate, then cut a notch in a lime wedge. Run the wedge around the glass, then dip the outside rim of the glass in the salt.
  • Shake up the ingredients. Place the Patron, Cointreau or Triple Sec, and lime juice in a shaker with 4 ice cubes and shake!
  • Strain and garnish. Strain it into the glass and garnish with a few lime wedges.

Step it up with clear ice

Want to make a really high-end looking Patron margarita? Use clear ice! Clear ice is ice that’s crystal clear, instead of cloudy like normal ice. You can cut it into organic looking shapes, and it looks just like you got the cocktail at a fancy bar. All you need is 24 hours and a small cooler! Go to How to Make Clear Ice.

Or, make a Patron margarita pitcher

Want to make Patron margaritas for a crowd? Make a pitcher instead! It’s much easier to make a pitcher if you’re making more than 2 drinks: and there’s no shaking required. Make sure to add the exact amount of ice specified below to fully dilute the drink. Here’s how to make a Patron margarita pitcher that makes 8 servings:

  • 2 cups Patron Silver tequila
  • 1 cup Cointreau or Triple Sec
  • ¾ cup lime juice
  • 3 handfuls ice

Add the ice and stir until cold. That’s it! We hope you love this Patron margarita recipe: let us know in the comments below!
