Banana Daiquiri

Looking for a tropical drink full of irresistible frosty flavor? Try this Banana Daiquiri recipe! This spin on the classic daiquiri is one of our favorite frozen drinks for impressing guests because: it’s just that irresistible! It’s got a pure banana flavor complimented by the zingy lime, vanilla and oak notes of aged rum, and a hint of orange liqueur on the finish. Take one sip and wowza! You’ll add this to your short list of rum drinks, stat.

Ingredients in this banana daiquiri recipe

This banana daiquiri is a spin of the Classic Daiquiri, a cocktail invented back in the 1800’s in Cuba. A classic daiquiri is just lime, rum, and simple syrup, though many people think of the drink as frozen. Frozen daiquiris made with ice in a blender came along later and rose to popularity in the 1990’s, like the ubiquitous Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri.

This banana daiquiri is a frozen-style daiquiri, but it has a sophisticated flavor that’s beyond what you’d expect from a frozen mix. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Bananas
  • Aged rum
  • Cointreau or Triple Sec
  • Lime juice
  • Simple syrup
  • Ice

Freeze the bananas (or substitute fresh)

The best way to make a banana daiquiri? With frozen bananas! They provide a beautifully frosty, icy texture that we love. But we get it: sometimes you just need a banana daiquiri now. You can also make it immediately with fresh bananas. Simply add another ½ cup ice to the recipe (follow the notes below!).

Use aged rum for best flavor

The type of rum that’s best in this banana daiquiri recipe? Aged rum. The vanilla and coconut notes in this type of rum makes the drink taste more complex. But you can use any type of rum you have on hand. Here are our top choices, in order of preference:

  • Aged rum, aka golden or añejo rum, has notes of vanilla, coconut, almond, citrus, or caramel
  • Dark rum has a deep, caramel flavor and notes of cinnamon and spices (see Dark Rum Drinks)
  • White rum has a straightforward flavor rum with the signature fruity finish

The only rum we wouldn’t substitute here? Coconut rum. It’s sweetened and more like a coconut liqueur, and it would make the drink much too sweet.

Cointreau vs Triple Sec

The other ingredient that deserves mention in this banana daiquiri? The orange liqueur. There are lots of types of orange liqueur: our favorite to use in cocktails is Cointreau. But you can substitute a good Triple Sec. Here’s what to know about them:

  • Cointreau is a premium orange liqueur with a developed-orange perfume flavor. It has notes of oak and vanilla, which make it taste more sophisticated than Triple Sec.
  • Triple Sec is slightly less refined in flavor than Cointreau: it has a very straightforward orange essence (almost like orange vodka). But either work in this banana daiquiri recipe!
